Black pepper (Piper Nigrum)
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit (the peppercorn), which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit is a drupe (stonefruit) which is about 5 mm (0.20 in) in diameter (fresh and fully mature), dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed.
Peppercorns and the ground pepper derived from them may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper (cooked and dried unripe fruit), green pepper (dried unripe fruit), or white pepper (ripe fruit seeds).

This plant is dioecious (dioecious) so it is known as male and female trees. The leaves are slender elliptical in shape. The fruit is oval-shaped like a lemon, yellow, fleshy and has a distinctive aroma because it contains essential oils in the flesh.

It is native to the island region of Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Malay Peninsula, New Guinea and the Philippines. It is also found in many parts of North East India. Best known for its fragrant essential oil, it has many commercial uses and is now widely cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world, especially in Asia, Madagascar, South America, and the Caribbean. Indonesia currently produces more than 90% of global patchouli oil volume (~1,600 metric tons).
