As the world continues to face human-driven climate threats on a scale never seen before, and as high inequality and a lack of institutional capacity persist across much of the globe, the sustainability narrative has evolved. What was once a matter of scientific discourse and an optional business strategy has become an obligatory transformation — one businesses must undergo to remain relevant to their consumers. This shift goes beyond a moral stance: sustainability is no longer just an alternative market strategy, but an integral part of a company’s long-term commitment and values.
This urgency for change is nowhere more evident than within the agricultural business ecosystem. Freshwater use and deforestation have become pressing issues among customer segments and regulators alike, translating into growing market demand for sustainable products — often measured by source traceability and the social dimensions of the entire supply chain. Against this backdrop, the essential oil industry has been directly affected, from new regulations requiring compliance to rising market demand for sustainable products. The need to strengthen sustainability across the entire supply chain has become impossible to ignore.
Sustainability as a Core Value, Not Just a Narrative
PT Alam Indonesia Raharja, known as Petani Global, is an Indonesian essential oil supplier with a longstanding commitment to sustainability — one of our core values. We move beyond narrative into concrete action: documented, and felt directly by our partners, from farmer to customer. Our sustainability commitment continues to create a positive impact through every product we offer.
Patchouli oil, one of our flagship products, is among the most widely used base notes in modern perfumery. Every stage of its production is monitored to ensure it is done sustainably, starting at the most upstream level — our farmers — where sustainable patchouli farming practices take place and thrive.
Introducing ECO-Patch: More Than a Commodity Program
Through the ECO-Patch (Environmentally and Community-Oriented Patchouli) program we run in Central Sulawesi, we see patchouli as far more than a commodity. It is an ecosystem for increasing farmer welfare and securing a stable supply for our customers, while simultaneously amplifying our sustainability message among the farmers themselves.
Our social extension workers empower farmer cooperatives as a platform for financial support and knowledge-sharing, while our agricultural extension workers accompany farmers from pre-planting through post-harvest to ensure end-to-end plantation quality. Together, the program aims to:
- Strengthen farmer institutions and cooperatives
- Provide the traceability our customers need for deforestation-free sourcing
- Introduce agroforestry practices to our farmers
- Pursue sustainability that is both social and environmental
ECO-Patch at a glance:
- Site location: 4 districts in Central Sulawesi
- Commodity: Patchouli
- Potential area: 1,000+ hectares
- Number of farmers: 200+
Adapting to Local Realities Across Central Sulawesi
As the program has expanded to villages across Central Sulawesi, we have found that each village has its own characteristics — a diversity that enriches the program’s flexibility. While the pace of adaptation from conventional to sustainable farming varies from place to place, our commitment to farmer prosperity and ecosystem health remains grounded, even as our approach adapts to fit each community.
A Holistic Commitment, Not a Side Project
Ultimately, ECO-Patch — one of our main sources of essential oil — was never intended as ordinary business expansion. It is our core program for ensuring that the highest-quality, sustainable patchouli oil reaches our valued customers, while simultaneously advancing farmer welfare, protecting the environment, and amplifying our sustainability message throughout our business — holistically, and one step at a time.
