Among the buyers who stopped by our booth at World of Coffee Brussels 2026 (SCA’s flagship European trade show, held June 25–27 at Brussels Expo), one Indonesian coffee kept coming up in conversation — not the familiar Robusta or Arabica, but a variety far fewer people have tasted: Liberica.
Liberica remains a rare sight on European shelves, and that scarcity is exactly what makes it worth a closer look. Here’s what sets it apart — and why it’s becoming a variety worth watching.
Robusta vs. Arabica vs. Liberica: What Sets Liberica Apart
| Robusta | Arabica | Liberica | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flavor profile | Bold, earthy, slightly bitter | Nuanced, bright, often fruity or floral | Bold and smoky-woody, with occasional floral or fruity undertones |
| Acidity | Low | Medium to high | Low |
| Body | Heavy, full-bodied | Light to medium | Heavy, full-bodied |
| Bean size & shape | Small to medium, rounded | Medium, oval | Notably larger, irregular and asymmetrical |
| Climate resilience | Hardy; tolerates lowland heat and humidity well | Sensitive; needs cooler, high-altitude conditions | Highly tolerant of heat, humidity, and poor soil |
| Global production share | ~40% of world coffee | ~60% of world coffee | A small fraction — often cited at well under 2% |
The biggest story here is climate. Arabica, which makes up the majority of the specialty coffee market, is increasingly vulnerable — it thrives only in a narrow band of cool, high-altitude conditions that climate change is steadily shrinking. Robusta is hardier, but Liberica takes resilience a step further: it grows well in lowland, humid climates where Arabica simply cannot, and shows strong natural tolerance to heat and many of the pests and diseases that threaten other varieties.
That resilience, combined with its scarcity — Liberica accounts for only a tiny sliver of global coffee production — is exactly what makes it interesting to European buyers right now. It offers roasters and specialty cafés a genuine point of differentiation: a distinctive, bold flavor profile paired with a compelling sourcing and sustainability story, at a time when Arabica supply is under growing pressure.
